The Panama Canal
The Panama Canal, a modern engineering wonder, was officially opened in 1914, with the passage of the cargo ship SS Ancon. More than a century later, the Panama Canal continues to be a facilitating instrument for world wide commerce by allowing the racking of more than 300 million tons of materials and goods from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic one. No visit to Panama is completed without getting to know the visitors center at Miraflores Locks on the Pacific side of the Canal.
